Buying a Pre-Owned Louis Vuitton Bag in Tokyo: Date Codes, Canvas Condition and Seller Checks

Share post:

Pre-owned Louis Vuitton in Tokyo is easy to find: every major resale store carries shelves of Speedy, Neverfull, Alma and Noe bags in monogram and Damier canvas. The volume is an advantage, because you can compare the same model in several conditions. It also means the work is in choosing the right example, not in finding one.

Start with the exact model

Write down the model, size, material and, if possible, the product code before you compare prices. A Speedy 25 and a Speedy Bandouliere 25 are different products. Monogram canvas, Damier Ebene, Damier Azur and Empreinte leather each have their own market. Our Neverfull price guide shows how to read the current retail position for one model.

Date codes and microchips: what they do and do not tell you

For decades Louis Vuitton stamped a date code inside each bag indicating where and when it was made. Resale specialists report that from around March 2021 the house replaced date codes with embedded microchips that are read with a scanner. Two consequences follow:

  • A bag made after that change will normally have no date code. Its absence on a recent bag is not a warning sign in itself.
  • A bag made before it should have one, in a format consistent with the stated age. Ask the seller where it is and what it reads.

Neither a date code nor a chip is a certificate of authenticity. Codes can be copied, and you cannot read a chip yourself. Treat both as one consistency check among several, and rely on the seller’s written guarantee.

How Louis Vuitton materials age

Part What to look for Why it matters
Coated canvas Cracks at folds and corners, peeling, stickiness Cracked canvas cannot be restored to original
Vachetta leather trim and handles Even honey patina versus dark, blotchy or water-marked areas Patina is normal; stains and dryness are flaws
Handle bases and piping Splits, loose stitching, exposed core These carry the weight and are costly to repair
Interior lining Peeling or sticky pockets on older bags, pen marks, odour Common on vintage pieces and hard to fix
Hardware Plating wear, a zip that runs smoothly, a matching padlock and key Replaced parts should be disclosed

Ask to see the bag away from display lighting. Handle it, open and close it, and smell the interior.

Reading a Japanese listing

Most Tokyo stores give a letter grade and a list of flaws. The grade is the seller’s own summary; the notes are what you are buying. A bag graded AB at one chain can be equivalent to a B at another. See Japan luxury condition grades explained for how to translate them.

Questions for the seller

  • What is the written authenticity guarantee, and what is the remedy if it is disputed later?
  • Has any part been repaired, replaced, re-dyed or re-glazed?
  • Which accessories are included: dust bag, strap, padlock, keys?
  • What is the return policy for an in-store purchase, and for a tax-free one?
  • Is the price tax-inclusive?

Boutique or pre-owned?

A boutique gives you a new bag, direct provenance and house service. Pre-owned gives you a lower entry price, discontinued models and immediate choice of condition. For canvas bags in particular, a lightly used example can be good value if the canvas and handle bases are sound. Our guide to where to buy Louis Vuitton in Tokyo covers the boutique side.

Where to compare

The large chains make comparison easy because they stock many examples of the same model. Start with Best Pre-Owned Luxury Stores in Tokyo and the wider pre-owned pillar guide.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Louis Vuitton boutique authenticate a pre-owned bag?

Do not plan on it. Brands do not generally offer authentication of second-hand purchases as a public service. Your protection is the seller’s guarantee and the evidence you keep.

Is patina a defect?

Even darkening of vachetta is expected and many buyers like it. Blotches, water stains and cracking are defects and should lower the price.

Is an older bag worse value?

Not necessarily. Condition matters more than age, but check the lining and canvas carefully on older pieces.
