If you want to buy Grand Seiko in Japan, Tokyo is the obvious place to do it. The brand’s home market has its largest boutiques, the broadest display of current references and, on the pre-owned side, deep supply. This guide covers where to go and what to confirm before you pay.
The two Ginza flagships
| Flagship Boutique, Ginza Namiki Street | Flagship Boutique in Wako | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | 6-6-5 Ginza, Chuo-ku | Wako main building, 1F and 2F, 4-5-11 Ginza, Chuo-ku |
| Opened | June 2023 | Inside the landmark clock-tower building at the Ginza 4-chome crossing |
| Access | About two minutes from Ginza Station exit B3 | About one minute from Ginza Station exit B1 |
| Listed hours | 11:00 to 19:00 | Follows Wako’s hours |
The Wako boutique displays new and limited pieces in a circular showcase on the first floor, with a lounge on the second floor for high-end and archive pieces. The two stores are about five minutes apart on foot, so it is easy to visit both.
Other places to see Grand Seiko
- Department store watch floors. The large stores in Ginza, Shinjuku and Nihonbashi have Grand Seiko counters. Useful if you want to compare with Swiss brands in one visit.
- Pre-owned dealers. Nakano Broadway and the Ginza specialists carry used Grand Seiko, including discontinued references. See our Nakano Broadway guide.
Japan-only and boutique-only models
Grand Seiko releases some references only in Japan, and some only through its own boutiques. Availability changes with each release, so do not rely on an old list. Ask the boutique three things:
- Is this reference sold only in Japan, or also in my country?
- Is it a limited edition, and if so how many were made?
- Is it in stock here today, or at the other Ginza boutique?
Understand what you are choosing between
Grand Seiko makes three types of movement, and the choice affects price, accuracy and service:
- Mechanical, including Hi-Beat calibres.
- Spring Drive, a mainspring-powered movement regulated by a quartz reference, known for its gliding seconds hand.
- 9F quartz, the brand’s high-accuracy quartz line.
Try each on. Case size, thickness and lug shape vary more than photographs suggest.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Warranty: how long is it, and is it honoured by service centres in my country?
- Service: where would the watch be serviced if I live abroad, and what is the usual interval?
- Bracelet sizing: can it be done on the spot, and will I receive the removed links?
- Tax-free: how is it processed at this store? From 1 November 2026 visitors pay the tax-inclusive price and claim a refund after customs confirmation at departure. See our tax-free guide.
- Price: is the displayed figure tax-inclusive?
Buying pre-owned Grand Seiko
Used examples can be good value, particularly for references that sold in large numbers in Japan. Check the same points as for any pre-owned watch: polishing, replaced parts, service history, the dealer’s warranty and what box and papers are included. Zaratsu-polished cases show careless refinishing clearly, so look at the case edges under good light.
Is it cheaper in Japan?
It can be, depending on the exchange rate, the tax-free position and duty at home. Use the method in Is Luxury Cheaper in Japan? with the current price for your exact reference.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment at the flagship boutiques?
Not for a normal visit. For a specific limited piece, contact the boutique first.
Which boutique should I visit first?
Either. If you are also visiting Wako or the 4-chome crossing, start there and walk to Namiki Street.
