Visitors searching for Gotemba Premium Outlets luxury brands are usually weighing a full day out of Tokyo against the chance of a lower price. Gotemba is one of Japan’s largest outlet centres, with a view of Mount Fuji on a clear day, and it does have stores from major luxury houses. Whether it is worth the trip depends on what you expect to find.

Getting there from Tokyo
- By train from Shinjuku: the Odakyu limited express “Mt. Fuji” Romancecar runs direct to Gotemba Station in about 95 minutes.
- By train from Tokyo Station: Shinkansen to Mishima (about 60 minutes), then local lines via Numazu to Gotemba (about 45 minutes more).
- From Gotemba Station: a free shuttle bus leaves at 00, 15, 30 and 45 minutes past each hour and takes five to ten minutes. Return shuttles leave the outlets at 10, 25, 40 and 55 past.
- By highway bus: direct buses run from Shinjuku and Tokyo Station to the outlets. Check the operator’s timetable, as services are limited.
Door to door, allow two hours each way. Traffic on the Tomei Expressway can add to bus times at weekends and holidays.
Which luxury houses are there
The centre is divided into West, East and Hill Side zones. Guides to the outlet list stores for houses including Gucci, Prada, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent and Celine in the West Zone, and Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Loro Piana and Dunhill in the East Zone. Tenants change, so check the official shop list before you travel.
What outlet stock is
Understand this before you go:
- Outlet stores sell past-season items and, at some brands, lines made for outlets. You will not find the current boutique collection.
- Sizes and colours are whatever is left. The more specific your target, the lower the chance of finding it.
- Discounts vary by brand and by item. A lower price on something you did not plan to buy is not a saving.
- Returns and exchanges at outlets are usually more restricted than at boutiques. Ask before paying.
Is it worth the trip?
| Go to Gotemba if | Stay in Tokyo if |
|---|---|
| You are flexible about model, colour and season | You want one specific current item |
| You have a spare full day | Your time in Tokyo is short |
| You want ready-to-wear, shoes or small leather goods | You want a classic bag that rarely reaches outlets |
| You are combining it with Hakone or Fuji | You would be going only for one brand |
For specific current products, the Tokyo boutiques are the reliable route: see Luxury Shopping in Tokyo. For a lower price on a classic bag, compare the pre-owned market in Pre-Owned Luxury in Tokyo.
Tax-free at the outlets
Many stores offer tax-free shopping to eligible visitors. Carry your passport. From 1 November 2026 the national system changes to a refund method; our tax-free guide explains it.
Tips for the day
- Arrive at opening and go to your priority store first. Popular luxury outlets form queues by late morning.
- Download the centre map. The zones are linked by a bridge and are a long walk apart.
- Know the boutique price of anything you are considering, so you can judge the discount.
- Check the forecast if the Fuji view matters; the mountain is often hidden by cloud.
- Book your return train or bus in advance at weekends.
Frequently asked questions
Are outlet items authentic?
The stores are operated by the brands or their authorised partners. The goods are genuine; they are simply not the current boutique collection.
Is everything cheaper than in Tokyo boutiques?
Outlet stock is priced below its original retail price, but it is different stock. A direct comparison is rarely possible.
